How to Find Your Voice As a Creator?

And why it matters

What’s up, Creator’s Circle!

Let's dive into something crucial for all of us: finding our voice in this bustling, digital world we call the creator economy. Finding your voice is like discovering the perfect harmony in a chaotic symphony – tough but incredibly rewarding.

Take me for example.

March 2020 I started creating content on LinkedIn. Yup, 4 years ago! How crazy is that?

I did It because of two things.

  1. It was a competition from my boss at the time, Kyle Coleman.

  2. It was a pandemic hobby.

I started out talking about field marketing. At the time, only 1% of people created content on LinkedIn on that platform. Want to know how many created content about field marketing?

0

Think about that. 650 million users on LinkedIn at the time, and I was the only person talking about what it was in an actual revenue organization and how much of an impact it had on the buyer’s journey.

After about a year and a half of talking about that, I started to branch out and talk about other things I was passionate about.

  • ABM (Account-Based Marketing)

  • Customer Marketing

  • Evangelism and Dark Social (haha, remember when that was a thing?)

  • And then, eventually, creators & influencers in the B2B world

I tried to find my unique voice in each of these areas, and I talked about the programs I worked on at the companies where I was working. It was my way of getting real-world examples and sharing my expertise on the subjects.

Let’s talk about your voice, though.

Why Finding Your Voice Matters

Your voice is your digital fingerprint. It makes you unique. In a sea of content, your voice attracts people to you.

  • 90% of people say being real is key to who they like and support.

  • 83% of marketers believe being real is vital for brands.

  • 61% of marketers say being genuine makes content marketing work best.

But finding your voice is a journey with ups and downs. Fear, especially the fear of not being good enough or of judgment, often holds us back.

Common Mistakes

  • Playing it Safe: Growth happens outside comfort zones.

  • Comparisonitis: Comparing yourself to others doesn’t help.

  • Ignoring Feedback: Don’t overlook constructive criticism.

How to Find Your Voice

  1. Know Yourself: Understand what makes you tick.

  2. Try, Fail, Repeat: Testing different styles helps you learn.

  3. Listen To Your Tribe: Your audience’s feedback is invaluable.

  4. Embrace the Mess: Your flaws make you relatable.

Deepening Your Connection with Your Audience

Building a deeper connection with your audience is essential. Here’s how:

  • Share Your Journey: Let people into your world. Your struggles and successes make you relatable.

  • Engage Actively: Talk with your audience, not at them. Ask questions, reply to comments, and be present.

  • Provide Value: Offer something unique. Whether it’s insight, entertainment, or education, ensure it’s valuable to your audience.

Leveraging Social Media

Social media is a powerful tool. Use it wisely:

  • Choose the Right Platforms: Not all platforms suit all voices. Find where your audience hangs out.

  • Be Consistent: Regular posting keeps you in people’s minds.

  • Use Visuals: Images and videos can say a lot. They grab attention and can express your voice visually.

Staying True to Yourself

In a world that’s always changing, staying true to yourself is key:

  • Reflect Regularly: Take time to think about your path and goals. Are you being true to yourself?

  • Adapt and Grow: Change is part of the journey. Embrace it, but keep your core values intact.

Expanding Your Skills

Never stop learning. New skills can help you express yourself better. Consider courses, workshops, and other learning opportunities to broaden your abilities.

Finding your voice in the creator economy is a journey worth taking. It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. Remember, your voice is powerful. It’s what connects you to others and helps you stand out.

So keep pushing, keep experimenting, and most importantly, keep being you.
