Don’t Make These Mistakes as a New Creator

We've all been there. Here's how to avoid them.

What’s up, Creator’s Circle!

Who here has had…

Self-doubt.

Imposter syndrome.

I don’t deserve to be successful.

We’ve all been there, right? 4 years into my journey now, and there are still days where I don’t think I deserve to be where I am sometimes.

Picture this: you're standing at the threshold of a grand adventure fueled by passion, creativity, and boundless potential. The air crackles with excitement, anticipation swirling like a whirlwind around you. You're ready to dive headfirst into the wondrous world of creativity, armed with only your imagination and a heart full of dreams.

But wait – before you take that leap of faith, your inner voice holds you back.

“You are not good enough.”

“You don’t know shit.”

“You will fail.”

Ha, I'd be rich if I had a dollar for everyone who told me I would fail. Fun fact: I was not the best student in school. I cared way too much about playing baseball and trying to make it to the big leagues than I did about the actual education part.

Teachers would tell me, Nick, that you will never be successful if you don’t put effort into improving your grades.

Well, I haven’t done too shabby for myself. I built a 7 figure business in less than a year, building the HBO of B2B GTM and a membership community around people of members who do actually care what I have to say.

The creative journey is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, confidence, self-doubt, and everything in between.

But before we hit the ground running, I want to shout out to my good friend Devin Reed and his newsletter, The Reeder. It's one of the best newsletters, and I look forward to reading it every Saturday. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this one. You won’t be disappointed. Devin is a content legend and an incredible creator.

Let's highlight some common mistakes that tend to trip us up at the starting line.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Starting as a Creator:

  • Perfection Paralysis

Ah, the classic trap of waiting for everything to be just right before taking the plunge. Spoiler alert: it never is. We get stuck in the endless loop of tweaking, refining, and second-guessing, but the truth is that perfection is an illusion.

  • Losing Consistency

Consistency is key in the world of content creation, yet many of us underestimate its importance. We sprint out of the gate with a flurry of activity, only to burn out and fizzle into oblivion.

  • Ignoring Feedback

Constructive criticism is like rocket fuel for growth, yet many of us shy away from it. We take it personally, brush it off, or ignore it altogether, missing out on valuable insights along the way.

Now, let's talk mindset.

What keeps us back from unleashing our full creative potential? It's that pesky little thing called self-doubt. We second-guess ourselves, compare our journey to others, and fall prey to the belief that we're not good enough. I can’t tell you how often I have tried to compare myself to Chris Walker, Justin Welsh, and the likes of all the big creators on LinkedIn. Why don’t I get 5 million likes in a few minutes of posting?! No one likes me, and then throw a self-pity party.

Those stereotypes that hold us back? They're nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

To be a successful creator, you must know that:

  • You Don't Need Fancy Gear

Believe it or not, some of the most successful creators started with nothing but a smartphone and a dream. It's not about the tools – it's about the story you have to tell.

  • Success Takes Time

Overnight success? Yeah, right. Behind every success story lies years of hard work, dedication, and, yes, plenty of setbacks along the way. Embrace the journey and trust the process.

  • Authenticity Trumps Everything

In a world of filters and facades, authenticity is your superpower. Your audience craves realness, so don't be afraid to show the messy, imperfect parts of yourself.

So, how do you move forward in this crazy, beautiful world of creativity?

It's all about mindset shifts and practical tips:

  • Embrace imperfection and prioritize progress over perfection.

  • Commit to consistency in your content creation efforts.

  • Embrace feedback as a tool for growth and improvement.

  • Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow creators.

And here's a little nugget of wisdom to send you on your way: the only thing holding you back is you. So, kick those doubts to the curb, embrace your uniqueness, and let your creativity run wild.

In my course for beginner creators, I share more practical strategies for breaking free from mental blocks and achieving success as a new creator.
